Sand Dollar

The early morning was still and the mist still clung in the air.  It was like walking in a cloud.  Low tide exposed a sandy beach untouched and bouncy underfoot, smoothed by the water.  Footprints sunk deep into the damp sand, only disappearing when waves of water washed over them, leaving a dull imprint.  Tiny white disks dotted the beach.  A sand dollar hunter's dream, whole dollars untouched by seagulls and other birds who would peck them apart to get to the tiny animal inside. We found dozens of perfect circles, with clear star imprints in the middle, smooth and fragile.  We put each one carefully into a bag filled with tissue and took them home.
